It was NOT a Cake Walk
Twenty years sounds tidy after the fact. It wasn’t. There were hard seasons, bad calls, equipment problems, cash-flow headaches, coffees that humbled us, and decisions we had to live with. But there were also generous customers, remarkable producers, loyal staff, and cups of coffee that reminded us why the work mattered.
Twenty years ago, I started Transcend with a stubborn belief that coffee could be better — better sourced, better roasted, and better understood. I did not know exactly what the next two decades would demand. I certainly did not know how many mistakes I would make along the way.
But I knew the work mattered. And somehow, through the people who kept showing up — customers, staff, producers, partners, and friends — Transcend kept going.
This coffee is a thank you, a small joke, and a marker of where we’ve been. More than anything, it is a reminder that good coffee has to keep earning its place. The first cup is easy. The twentieth year is the real test.
Thanks, Poul
The twentieth year is the real test
Twenty years has taught us something similar. Hype comes and goes. Trends move quickly. What lasts is the harder work: choosing good coffees, roasting them carefully, serving people well, and trying to earn the next cup.
Also in July: The 20th Birthday Latte
Our café team created a playful birthday cake latte for July — a little more festive, a little less restrained, and exactly the kind of thing a 20th birthday deserves.
Important distinction:
The latte is the playful café drink. Cake Walk is the anniversary blend for home brewing: naturally dessert-like, with no flavouring.

The Very Beginning
Poul spent almost a day digging this hole to connect a new plumbing line.
Where It All Began
After three months of building I opened Transcend Coffee on 99th and 62nd. Roastery and Cafe all in one.
First Trip to Origin
Poul first visited Panama in 2008 when he went after being invited to judge the Best of Panama coffee competition.
Celebrate with Cake Walk
A limited anniversary blend with notes of vanilla cake, strawberry jam, and brown sugar. No flavouring. Just coffee — and twenty years of trying to earn the next cup.
