We are excited to announce the completion of ORIGIN, the latest documentary from Edmonton filmmaker Mike Wivell of Square Sheep Films.

Before ORIGIN begins its journey onto the international film festival circuit, Square Sheep Films and Transcend Coffee are coming together for one very special evening.

Part 20th anniversary celebration. Part film premiere. Part coffee experience.

Guests will be among the first people ever to see ORIGIN at this exclusive public screening of the completed documentary.

The story

Filmed in Canada and Costa Rica, ORIGIN goes beyond the story of building a coffee company. It follows Poul’s journey into the world of specialty coffee and his involvement with Costa Rica’s micro-mill movement—exploring the relationships, people and passion behind the coffee we drink every day.

In 2006, Poul left legal practice to build Transcend Coffee around a different idea of what the coffee trade could be. That journey led to Costa Rica and to Francisco Mena of Exclusive Coffees, who was working alongside independent farmers as they broke away from large conglomerates and began processing their own coffee through boutique micro-mills.

Twenty years later, their relationship sits at the heart of a film about entrepreneurship, risk, friendship and the people who challenged an established system to create something more equitable.

And the story won’t end when the credits roll

Poul will host a special coffee tasting featuring Sumava Black Cherry coffee from Exclusive Coffees in Costa Rica—connecting the audience directly with the people, places and coffee featured in the film.

The $45 ticket includes admission and a 300 g bag of Sumava Black Cherry coffee for pickup at the event. Each ticket admits one person, and the order confirmation email serves as the ticket. Nothing will be shipped.
