Santa Rosa is a mountainous district located just east of the city of Jaén. Its misty heights provide ample moisture and cool temperatures for high-quality coffee. We’ve bought coffees from this area before, but this was the first time we have been able to visit, but didn’t get to spend as much time with the producers in Santa Rosa as we would have liked. When we arrived we met with Israel Vasquez and Onias Quispe Guerrero, two local farmers who are part of El Diamante. Before we visited the farms, Israel’s family served a lunch that by all accounts was delicious.
Last year, we had purchased a very small lot from one of Onias’ neighbours but were unable to secure more than 2 bags. This year we were lucky enough to get our hands on a lot straight from Onias himself, which has a very similar profile. He grows a lot of Pache, Catuai, Bourbon, and Caturra. He also has some older Catimor hybrid trees that he’s now phasing out for plants with higher-quality potential. He and his wife Ofilda grow their coffee on two separate 1-hectare plots and carry out processing at Israel’s house next door. All of the coffee is currently dried on covered patios but they hope to build raised and covered beds in the next year.

We want to draw your attention to a subtle change on our labels, all of our labels now include both filter and espresso symbols. The reason for this is simple: all of our coffees have been prepared so that they are well suited to any brewing method. Different brewing methods will highlight different aspects of our coffees, making each brew unique. We will continue to classify any coffees we deem especially suited for brewing espresso.
