Mario's farm is on a north-facing slope in the mountains above the West Valley in Costa Rica. There, his family has been growing Villa Sarchi, Caturra, and Catuai for 40 years. His family had sold their freshly harvested coffee cherries to cooperatives in the area, but began selling them at a higher price to Ricardo Perez's Helsar de Zarcero mill in 2009. He built his own mill and drying beds for the 2013 harvest to add more value to his coffee and receive a higher share of the final export price. Unfortunately, heavy winds destroyed his small mill in 2015. The West Valley is known for its high winds, and Mario is certainly not the first farmer to experience damage from them. He decided not to rebuild his mill and has refocused his efforts on planting new coffee trees and rejuvenating his farm. This is now our 9th year purchasing coffee from his farm, and we are happy to say it's as sweet as ever.
