Maria Teresa’s finca Quebrada Honda—“deep ravine”—is located, is known for its wax palms, a breathtaking species of palm that was named Colombia’s national tree in 1985 and that is, unfortunately, facing extinction. The inhabitants of this region are mostly farmers and small-scale cattle ranchers. Besides coffee, the most popular crops are corn, tree tomato and Castilla blackberries, a variety of large and juicy blackberries found on farms throughout Colombia, but native to El Carrizal.
This is the second year we’ve purchased coffee from Maria, and this year we have two different offerings. This first lot is from earlier in the harvest, while we will release the second once this runs out. While Nariño is known for its elevations, seeing coffee grown at up to 2600meters above sea level is rare. At heights like this, ripening happens so slowly that it can seem like the cherries will never fully develop. Fortunately, this coffee grown by Maria Teresa Rodriguez Rojas showcases all of the complexity and intensity that comes from ripening in the cooler temperatures high up on the mountainside. Like many small Colombian farmers, she carries out post-harvest processing herself, first de-pulping her coffee cherries immediately after picking them, then fermenting for 12 hours before finally drying them on raised beds for 8 days.
We sourced this coffee through Azahar, a Colombia based exporter that we’ve worked with since 2017. They are committed to providing coffee producers with stable, high prices for their coffee, as well as to helping them improve and manage quality over time. Their quality control procedures are state of the art and they’re the most transparent exporter we’ve ever worked with. We look forward to working with them for years to come!

We want to draw your attention to a subtle change on our labels, all of our labels now include both filter and espresso symbols. The reason for this is simple: all of our coffees have been prepared so that they are well suited to any brewing method. Different brewing methods will highlight different aspects of our coffees, making each brew unique. We will continue to classify any coffees we deem especially suited for brewing espresso.
