Transcend Coffee and Roastery
Ricardo Calderon has made a name for himself as one of the most consistent producers of excellent coffee in the Dota Valley. A Gesha variety from his Don Cayito estate set records at the 2018 Cup of Excellence, and that wasn’t even the first time he’d won the prestigious competition. We’ve featured a lot from his Don Cayito farm before, but this time we’re bringing you something entirely different.
This is a Moka variety, which is originally from Yemen. It’s a mutation of the Typica trees that were planted there centuries ago and has been sent through to South America, but while t makes a super interesting cup of coffee, it is notoriously low-yielding and tough to get a return on the investment. As demand for more unique coffee is growing, some farmers are ready to try planting and harvesting varieties like Moka. In the skilled hands of Ricardo, we have a lot that tastes like currant and grapefruit with a deep brown sugar sweetness that ties it all together. We think you’re going to like it a lot!
