Edwin Alvarado and his family live in the small town of Leon Cortes where they cultivate coffee and operate a family owned mill named La Joya which translates into English as "the jewel."

As their mill is located in the town, the Alvarado family has become an integral partner for other producers in the area looking to have their cherries locally processed.

Before the 2017-2018 harvest, the family made the decision to remove a bunch of struggling coffee trees and plant seedlings where they had been. The trees had been producing more quakers (beans that don’t properly develop inside of an otherwise ripe cherry) and they’d noticed the yields had also gone down. The decision was a tough one: It meant that there would not be enough coffee of their own to justify processing and selling. They sold what cherry they had to the local co-op, which meant less money for the year. However, the next year they had produced enough and were able to sell to us again and we were impressed with how much their coffee had improved in quality! We’re so happy to be able to support the work that Edwin Kenneth, and Ulysses do and we hope you’re as excited as we are that their coffee is back yet again!
